Dear friends,
As we are in the midst of a heated political season in between the presidential nominating conventions, this week's Torah portion is particularly applicable.
Parashat Shoftim (judges) is all about handing down laws to ensure that society is governed fairly.
These principles form the basis of our constitution and those of most western nations. Beginning with the first famous phrase (justice, justice, shall you pursue), the Torah mandates us to “govern the people with due justice, mishpat-tzedek”, specifically not to take bribes or show partiality (and generally to establish a fair system of justice.
