Parashat Yitro (Moses's Father-in-law Jethro) Exodus 18:1-20:23
HafTorah Isaiah 6:1-13
Dear friends,
We begin the month of February with the stirring Torah portion--Yitro. Yitro (Jethro) is Moses's father-in-law. He visits the Hebrew camp. He is not a child of Israel, but a very wise man and his advice to Moses on appointing judges to take the pressure from his shoulders is key to the development of the nation in the wilderness. And of course, this is the Sedrah where Moses on behalf of the Hebrew nation receives the Ten Commandments which we will read and study at our Shabbat service tonight at 7:30 pm and tomorrow at 9:30 am on Zoom only.
Our Haftorah features our most prolific Prophet Isaiah and features his revelation, not unlike that experienced by the Israelites at Mount Sinai when they received the Ten Commandments. We find the prayer Kadosh Kadosh Kadosh......"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Hosts. The whole world is full of His glory." We now recite this in the Kedusha portion of our Amidah at every service of every day!
With an abundance of caution, we are now holding all our services on Zoom until it is safe to return to the synagogue. In some ways, this should be an improvement because all who are attending the service will be on the screen at one time and hopefully, we won't experience the technical problems we have been experiencing with the wi-fi at the synagogue.
