Parashat Hachodesh (Sabbath month) Exodus12:1-20
HafTorah Ezekiel 45:18-46:15, Samuel 20:18, 20:42
Dear friends,
As we make our preparations for Passover, we have come to the observance of Shabbat HaChodesh which occurs on the Shabbat immediately preceding the beginning of the month of Nisan. We read a special portion of the Torah from the Book of Exodus (Chapter 12, verses 1-20) which commands Moses and Aaron while still in Egypt to observe this new month (Rosh Chodesh) as the "beginning of months", a new beginning for the entire people of Israel as they are about to escape their bondage and begin their journey.
The portion concludes with the detailed instructions for the observance of Passover (Pesach) for seven days and then afterward for all time.
We are now just two weeks from that festival and should have begun to prepare ourselves and our homes. A reminder that we will be together on Zoom the first night of Passover for an abbreviated service and the reading of the first half of the Haggadah at 5:30 pm on Saturday, March 27th. So that we will all be on the "same page", will be using the Maxwell House 1992 edition and the Likrat Shabbat prayerbook which is the same that we use on Friday nights. The prayerbook and Havdalah candles are available at the office. The Haggadot and prayer books are free of charge (take as many as you need) and the candles are $5 each. If you need a prayerbook mailed to you, please let us know ASAP so it gets to you on time.
Back to this Shabbat, our regular reading will be the conclusion of the Book of Exodus (the double portion of Vayakel and Pekudei. The laws of the observance of Shabbat are taught and the portable tabernacle is completed and along with its contents, is readied to accompany the children of Israel on their long and arduous journey toward the promised land and becoming a holy nation built upon morality and Torah principles.
As we end this chapter of our studies and begin a new month (Nisan), a new book of the Torah (Leviticus or Vayikra), and a new season (Spring!), lets join together on Zoom for Shabbat services tonight at 7:30 pm and tomorrow morning at 9:30 am. See you then! Ron
