Parashat Tazria (conceives) Leviticus 12:1-15:33 - Metzora (leper)
2nd Torah Numbers 28:9-15
HafTorah Isaiah 66:1-24, 66:23
Dear friends,
I would like to thank all who attended Tuesday evening's Yom HaShoah Proclamation at the New Port Richey City Council meeting. We appreciate the city's recognition of this very important observance for the Jewish community and for all faiths. And the turnout from our congregation (I counted about twenty of us) was especially significant.
In the week ahead, we will be observing Yom Hazikaron (Israel's Memorial Day) on Tuesday, April 25th and Yom Ha'atzmaut (Israel's Independence Day, 75th anniversary) on Wednesday, April 26th. Stay tuned for public programming opportunities. And please look forward to information on our congregation's Israeli trip to take place October 30-November 10, a unique opportunity for all (first timers and repeat travelers) to tour the Jewish homeland during the 75th anniversary year. We will be getting a committee together during the month of May to study and revise the itinerary and plan this exciting journey.
On this Shabbat weekend, we also celebrate the new month of Iyar. When Rosh Chodesh (the beginning of the new month and the appearance of the new moon) coincides with Shabbat, we have an especially lively service including the chanting of Hallel (psalms and prayers of praise), a special 2nd Torah reading from the Book of Bamidbar (Numbers), and a special second Haftorah from the Prophet Isaiah where he states that evil will ultimately be defeated and the "it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, that all will worship Adonai". The special Torah reading and Haftorah will follow our regular reading and study from the Book of Leviticus (Vayikra) where we will read the portions of Tazria and Metzora which contain the mitzvot concerning many aspects of purification. We will of course, add readings for Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha'atzmaut at this evening's and tomorrow morning's Shabbat/Rosh Chodesh services.
Please plan to attend our services to ensure a minyan and continue the momentum that we have built throughout the spring season. Service times are the usual 7:30 pm tonight and 9:30 am tomorrow morning. Shabbat Shalom/Chodesh Tov! Ron
