Weekly Message 04.28.2023 Parashat Acharei-Kedoshim

Parashat Acharei Kedoshim - Leviticus 16:1 - 20:27

Acharei (after the death of)

Kedoshim (Holy ones)

HafTorah - Amos 9:17 - 15

Dear friends,

Again, thanks to all that helped make the Yom HaShoah commemoration at New Port Richey so meaningful. It was well covered in this week's Suncoast News including a photo of all of our congregants who attended with the Mayor and City Council.

This week's Torah reading is a very familiar one. In the Book of Leviticus (Vayikra) we read the combined portions of Acharei Mot and Kedoshim which we also read in the morning (Shacharit) and afternoon (Mincha) on every Yom Kippur. On Yom Kippur morning, we read the beginning of the portion which details the Yom Kippur ritual of the scapegoat carrying away the burden of our sins. Of course, in the post-Temple world, we substitute these sacrifices through our deeds and prayers. We know all too well how Jews and others have been designated scapegoats for countless unfortunate times and that we must fight scapegoat—ism always. We may disagree with ideas and loathe those ideas and philosophies, but we should never loathe fellow human beings. In Chapter 19, we are introduced to important fundamental moral laws that form the basis of human society to this day including the prohibition of hatred and vengeance and the love of one's neighbor. Again, we can hate ideas, but not people!

Please join me at services in-person or virtually on Zoom tonight at 7:30 pm and tomorrow morning at 9L30 am so that we will be able to pray and study with a full minyan and those saying Kaddish in memory of loved ones will be able to do so. And, please remember that next Friday May 5th we will have our always special Shabbat dinner. We begin with a short service at 6:30 pm followed by a delicious dinner and much conversation and merriment!

Shabbat Shalom!

Ron Becker,

Spiritual Leader
