Parashat Bamidbar (In the Desert) Numbers 1:1 - 4:20
HafTorah - Hosea 2:1 - 22
Dear friends,
This Shabbat as we prepare for the Shavuot holiday, we will read excerpts from the Book of Ruth at this evening's service and will begin reading the Book of Bamidbar (Numbers) tomorrow morning.
After learning about the mitzvot and other lessons from the Book of Vayikra (Leviticus), we now return to the journey through the wilderness between slavery in Egypt and freedom in Israel. We begin with a detailed census and description of the formation of the Israelite tribes in their encampments and the responsibilities of the Levites in transporting the Mishkan (Tabernacle) throughout the journey. Our Haftorah from the Prophet Hosea (2:1-22) which concludes with the words that we recite every weekday morning upon donning the Tefillin and to our spouses when we marry:
וְאֵרַשְׂתִּיךְ לִי, לְעוֹלָם; וְאֵרַשְׂתִּיךְ לִי בְּצֶדֶק וּבְמִשְׁפָּט, וּבְחֶסֶד וּבְרַחֲמִים.
21 And I will betroth thee unto Me for ever; yea, I will betroth thee unto Me in righteousness, and in justice, and in lovingkindness, and in compassion.
וְאֵרַשְׂתִּיךְ לִי, בֶּאֱמוּנָה; וְיָדַעַתְּ, אֶת-יְהוָה.
22 And I will betroth thee unto Me in faithfulness; and thou shalt know the LORD.
Looking forward to sharing this pre-Shavuot Shabbat with you this evening at 7:30 pm and tomorrow morning at 9:30 am held in- person and on Zoom. And below, please find our activities and religious service for Shavuot including our Tikken Leil Shavuot study session and prayers which include the Yizkor Service on the morning of June 12th. !
Shabbat Shalom,

With the festival of Shavuot just ahead of us, I am inviting you to join in on our Tikkun Leil Shavuot and our Shavuot services. It is traditional to study Torah on the eve of Shavuot. At 7 pm on Tuesday, June 11th we will be joining our friends at Temple Beth David virtually on Zoom for an exciting study session. Please see Rabbi Jen Goldberg's invitation below. It would be great if we at the JCC could show our support for this important event by logging on that evening. And all are invited to lead a study session as per Rabbi Jen's encouragement below. She will be leading one on the Book of Ruth (which is traditionally read on Shavuot) and I will be leading one on the traditional poem Akdamut which introduces us to the reading of the Ten Commandments on Shavuot. To participate, you need only to log onto the Zoom meeting (instructions will be provided to all those who wish to participate. I hope to see many of you on my screen for this fantastic learning experience.
Then on Wednesday, June 12th at 9:30 am, we gather at the synagogue for the Shavuot
prayer service which includes the Yizkor memorial service. This will be the last opportunity to recite the Yizkor prayers until Yom Kippur as we remember those family members and friends who came before us לְדוֹר וָדוֹר from generation to generation.
So please join us for the Tikkun Leil Shavuot study session at 7 pm on June 11th on Zoom and for services on June 12th in-person and on Zoom and let me or Rabbi Jen know if you would like to lead a session as well! With best wishes. !חג שבועות שמח Ron Becker, Spiritual Leader
