Dear friends,
Thanks to all who attended this week's memorial service for Howard Land, the beloved brother of Paul Land and uncle of Mark Land. It was good to see the sanctuary so full and a beautiful reception in the auditorium. I only wish it was for a happier occasion and that we fill the sanctuary and auditorium with many simchas in the future!
This Shabbat, we continue reading the Book of Bamidbar with the 3rd portion of Beha'lotecha. The sedrah opens with Moses instructing the Levites for service in the Mishkan (Tabernacle). It also recounts the granting of a second chance to offer the Passover sacrifice if people were either traveling or ill during the festival. This practice continues today with the observance of Pesach Sheni which takes place one month after the holiday and lasts for one day. The nearly unceasing complaints of the Israelites to Moses continue (this time bored with manna and desiring meat to eat) and test Moses's leadership and Hashem's patience as they think only of their present situation and not the potential that lies before them in the Promised Land. To quote Rabbi Joseph Skloot: "So often we feel we are journeying in the wilderness, our vision of the future constrained by the bleak present. At these times, it's helpful to remember just how limited our vision really is. There is indeed potential for hope, for joy, and for radical transformation in our lives, if only we muster the strength to look beyond our narrow horizon."
