Parashat Korach (person leading rebellion against Moses) Numbers 16:1 -18:32
2nd Torah - Rosh Chodesh Numbers 28:9-15
HafTorah Isaiah 66:1-24, Isaiah 66:23, Samuel 1 20:18, Samuel 1 20:42
Dear friends,
Thanks to all who attended the evening shiva minyanim in mcmory of our dear friend Shirley Cohen. Providing a minyan for those in mourning to be able to say Kaddish after their loved one is an important mitzvah and I and the Cohen family very much appreciate our community's coming together. As the Shiva week comes to an end at this evening's Shabbat/Rosh Chodesh service, after welcoming the "Shabbat Bride" with the singing Lecha Dodi, we chant
Hamakom yenakhem etekhem betokh shaar avelay tziyon viyrushalayim.
"May Adonai Comfort You Among the Mourners of Zion and Jerusalem".
After reading last week's Torah portion of Shelach Lecha and learning of the fate of wandering in the wildnerness for decades until the last of the adults who left Egypt and slavery have passed away, we are now confronted in the portion of Korah with an outright rebellion. The event causes us to judge between humility and arrogance, between selflessness and selfishness. It also illuminates the feeling of powerlessness that many in the camp experienced after the report of the spies and the resulting punishment. We learn that we must listen to those who feel lost and disenfranchised without losiing sight of our morality and principles and art of compromise.
On this Shabbat, we simultaneouslly celebrate Rosh Chodesh, the new month of
Tammuz. The confluence of Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh on the same day occurs rarely, only once or twice a year. To observe this occasion, we chant Hallel (Songs of Praise) and a special Haftorah from the Prophet Isaiah, Chapter 66 where he states ini verse 13:
Like one whom a mother comforts.
So Adonai will comfort you:
You shall find comfort in Jerusalem.
And concludes in verse 23:
And new moon after new moon,
And sabbath after sabbath,
All flesh shall come to worship Me
—said Adonai
Please join us this evening at 7:30 pm and tomorrow morning at 9:30 am in-person or vitually on Zoom for our worship and study as we begin the new Hebrew month of Tammuz.
