Thanks to all that made last Shabbat such a delight!
We celebrated Danielle Merkle's birthday with an Oneg last Friday evening and the Aufruf of Rebecca Price and Adam Baxter with a Shabbat luncheon the next day. Rebecca and Adam were married this week in a beautiful setting before family friends at the Garden Club of Dade City. As we are deliberately (slowly but surely) opening up our facility, we encourage all to celebrate their happy milestones during and after our Shabbat and Yom Tov services! Also, we recently learned that Pasco County will be represented on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Federation of Florida's Gulf Coast and that our long time congregant Barry Cohen has been named to that position. Congratulations to Barry who will certainly represent us well and bring attention to our synagogue and our Jewish community.
This Shabbat, we read from the third triennial portion of Chukkat in the Book of Bamidbar. The first part of Chukkat was previously read on Shabbat Parah prior to the festival of Pesach and describes the sacrifice of the Red Heffer. In this week's reading, we are confronted with the death of Aaron and the passing of his priestly duties and vestments to his son Eliezer. Earlier in the Sedrah, Miriam dies, much more grumbling and threat of rebellion occurs, and Moses himself is told that he will not lead his people into the Promised Land after "striking the rock" to produce water. One thing that does change however, is that there is finally a feeling of remorse and taking responsibility for negative actions among the people. This is a critical transformation towards true freedom and a break from the previous attitudes of complete dependence.
