Parashat Eikev (Because) Deuteronomy 7:12 - 11:25
HafTorah 49:14 - 51:3

Dear friends,
I hope you all had a joyous Tu B'Av celebration this week and were able to connect and/or re-connect with loved ones on that "Jewish Valentines Day"! As the summer is flying by, we are only a little over a month until the High Holy Days and fall festivals. And this Shabbat, we continue our preparation for those awesome days of our calendar with our continued Torah reading of the Book of Deuteronomy (7:12-9:3) and chanting of the second of the seven Haftorahs of Consolation leading us from Tisha B'Av and Rosh Hashanah (Isaiah 49:14-51:3).
The Book of Deuteronomy consists largely of our greatest Prophet Moses delivers discourses to those who have endured the many years in the wilderness, while learning the mitzvot and the importance of carrying them out when occupying the Promised Land. They are reminded of the consequences of abandoning these principles and not treating people and the land with the respect they are due. And as Isaiah indicates, there will always be temptations to revert to practicing idolatry (i.e. worshipping greed and selfishness) so at that time and in all present and future generations, we must remember to maintain our spiritual identity. Regardless of where we reside, we have been given an extraordinary gift, a wonderful land with the potential of abundance and joy and with the physical and mental capacity to maintain it for ourselves and all who inhabit it.
Let's continue this discussion as we study and pray together this Shabbat, this evening at 7 pm and tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 9:30 am in person and virtually, on Zoom.

Please see the late summer and fall schedule below and take note that volunteers at Metropolitan Ministries are needed more than ever during the summer when the young residents are not in school. Thanks to all who gave of their time this week. Our next session will be on Thursday, August 27th at 11 am. You will find the signup link below.
