Dear friends,
Chris and I have just returned from a week in NJ/NY where together with our sister and brother-in-law and cousins fulfilled the mitzvah of Zichronot (remembrance) by visiting, sprucing up, and chanting the Eil Molei Rachamim (אֵל מָלֵא רַחֲמִים) memorial prayer at the gravesites of our relatives and friends and those of the parents of our congregants Laura Bernas and Barry Cohen. Please save the date of Sunday, September 6th when we will be visiting the cemeteries Beit Olam in Trinity at 10 am and Grace Memorial at 11:30 am to chant אֵל מָלֵא רַחֲמִים for our congregants interred there and also for anyone who is unable to visit friends and relatives buried out of state. So please make an effort to attend one of those venues and help us make a minyan so that we are able to say Kaddish as well.
And, as we continue to prepare for the High Holy Days during this sacred month of Elul, we will gather at 7 pm on Saturday, September 5th for a social hour followed by the chanting of Selichot penitential prayers as we seek forgiveness for transgressions that we have committed since the last Holy Days.
This Shabbat, we continue our reading of the Book of Deuteronomy (21:10-23:7) a portion that contains more mitzvot than any other in the Torah. In his discourse, Moses reviews a wide variety of civil and criminal laws regarding family, property, loans, vows, divorce and numerous others providing a blueprint for behavior in the Promised Land and for all of the generations including ours that follow.
This Shabbat's Haftorah given to us by the Prophet Isaiah (54:1-10) is the 5th of the 7 Haftorahs of Consolation between Tisha B'Av and Rosh Hashanah. In it, Isaiah reminds us how Hashem has rebuked us for past transgressions but takes us back in love:
For the mountains may move, and the hills be shaken, but Hashem's loyalty shall never move from you, Nor Hashem's covenant of friendship be shaken, who takes you back in love.
כִּ֤י הֶהָרִים֙ יָמ֔וּשׁוּ וְהַגְּבָע֖וֹת תְּמוּטֶ֑ינָה וְחַסְדִּ֞י מֵאִתֵּ֣ךְ לֹא־יָמ֗וּשׁ וּבְרִ֤ית שְׁלוֹמִי֙ לֹ֣א תָמ֔וּט אָמַ֥ר מְרַחֲמֵ֖ךְ יְהֹוָֽה
