Weekly Message 09.02.2022 Parashat Shoftim

Parashat Shoftim (Judges) Deuteronomy 16:18 - 21:9

HafTorah Isaiah 51:12 - 52:12

Dear friends,

It has been a difficult week as we have come together to mourn the loss of our dear Rebitzen Sandra Goldberg z"l. Thanks to all who have joined us at the synagogue and on Zoom this week as we remember and celebrate her life and Rabbi Al is able to say Kaddish with a minyan. The last night of shiva will be tomorrow (Saturday) evening at 6:30 pm when we will conduct a Shabbat Mincha service followed by more reminiscences of Sandy and how her many acts of kindness benefitted so many of us, and finally, the Kaddish and Havdalah as we usher in the new week. Please join us tomorrow evening in-person or on Zoom for this special service.

We are now only three weeks from Rosh Hashanah and as we intensify our preparations, we will hold our annual Selichot service on the evening of September 17th and our cemetery visitations to Beit Olam in Trinity, Grace Memorial in Hudson, and the National Cemetery in Bushnell on September 18th

But first things first! This Shabbat marks the 4th of the 7 weeks of consolation between Tisha B'Av and Rosh Hashanah. We continue our reading and study of the Book of Deuteronomy, this week's portion being Shoftim (judges and justice) which contains the powerful "Justice, Justice shall you follow, that you may live and inherit which the Lord your G-d gives you". The word "Justice"

צדק צדק

is repeated to emphasize the critical importance of even-handed justice for all. We will be reading from the third trienniel of the Sedrah which emphasizes the sin of bearing false witness and continues with the laws of warfare including the prohibition of destroying trees and vegetation in conquered lands.

Our Haftorah is the 4th of Consolation. We skipped the 3rd Haftorah of Consolation last week as it was Rosh Chodesh which has its own special Haftorah---but not to fear, next week we will chant and study both the 3rd and the 5th Haftorot of Consolation! This week's reading is from the Prophet Isaiah, Chapters 51 and 52. As he follows the theme of justice for all in the Torah reading, Isaiah sets out a program to plant heaven upon the earth and set us on a steady moral course.

I am looking forward to seeing you tonight at 7:30 pm, tomorrow morning at 9:30 am and tomorrow evening at 6:30 pm (in-person or virtually on Zoom) as we celebrate Shabbat together and remember our dear Sandy Goldberg z"l.
