Weekly Message 09.03.2021 Parashat Nitzavim

Parashat Nitzavim (ones standing) Deuteronomy 29:9 - 30:20

HafTorah Isaiah 61:10 - 63:9

Dear friends,

I would like to thank all those who participated in our very successful cemetery visitations last Sunday to help fulfill the mitzvah of Zichronot (remembrance) where we recall those who gave us life and friendship and how they helped shape our own lives. In Hebrew, we often chant l'dor v'dor (from generation to generation) as we celebrate all of life's cycles.

I was made particularly aware of

of the importance of connecting our faith and heritage from one generation to the next as I officiated at a Brit Milah/Baby Naming this week. On Sunday, we paid tribute to those who came before us and on Wednesday, I had the honor of naming an eight-day-old Jewish boy. What better way to inaugurate the new year and celebrate l'dor v'dor!

With Rosh Hashanah upon us, we gather in the synagogue tonight at 7:30 pm and tomorrow morning at 9:30 am to read the portion of Nitzavim. The Hebcal website summarizes it thusly:

"In Parashat Nitzavim, Moses told the Israelites that all the people stood before G-d to enter into the covenant, violation of which would bring on curses, but if they returned to

G-d and heeded G-d's commandments, then G-d would take them back in love and bring them together again from the ends of the world. Moses taught that this Instruction was not beyond reach, and Moses put before the Israelites life and death, blessing and curse, and exhorted them to choose life by loving G-d and heeding the commandments."

This is a continuation of the theme of the entire book of Deuteronomy and simplifies into the fact that we have choices to perform good or evil and there are consequences to our actions. Our Haftorah from the words of the Prophet Isaiah is the last Haftorah of Consolation and as such, also prepares us to be consoled on the days of Judgement immediately ahead.

I look forward to seeing you in shul on this Labor Day weekend, the last Shabbat weekend before the High Holy Days and again on Rosh Hashanah eve (Monday, September 6th at 7:30 pm), Rosh Hashanah mornings (Tuesday and Wednesday, September 7th and 8th at 9:30 am), Rosh Hashanah afternoon (Tuesday, September 7th at 6:30 pm), and at Taschlich at the Cotee River (Wednesday, September 8th at 2:30 pm.

Shabbat Shalom and best wishes,

Ron Becker,

Spiritual Leader
