Dear friends,
It was great to see so many old friends at our High Holy Day services and Chris and I look forward to seeing you again as this beautiful holiday season continues, and to seeing other congregants who were away and not able to attend High Holy Day services at the JCC. Thanks to all who decorated our synagogue's Sukkah and helped with setting up the sanctuary for Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur and then back again for Shabbat and festivals. And thanks to our B'nai Mitzvot anniversary celebrants for the wonderful Shabbat Shuva service and luncheon and all those who helped with the Break Fast following Yom Kippur. It is great to have a "caring and sharing" community!
This Shabbat we welcome the festival of Sukkot, the "season of our joy" with Shabbat, Yom Tov services tonight at 7:30 pm and tomorrow morning at 9:30 am. We will have Kiddush in our newly decorated Sukkah and enjoy the holiday together. You will see our newly acquired lulav/etrog sets but because it is Shabbat, we will not be waving them during the Hoshanot. If you would like to perform this mitzvah, I will leave two sets in my office and have one set at my home. So, please visit and I will guide you through it.
This Shabbat/Yom Tov, we read from the Book of Leviticus a comprehensive description of all the festival days including Sukkot. Our Haftorah will be taken from the writings of the Prophet Zachariah including the famous "And the Lord shall be King over all the earth. In that day shall the Lord be One, and His name One".
14:9 וְהָיָ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה לְמֶ֖לֶךְ עַל־כָּל־הָאָ֑רֶץ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא יִהְיֶ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה אֶחָ֖ד וּשְׁמ֥וֹ אֶחָֽד׃
