Thanks to those who have expressed an interest and especially to those who have signed up already to volunteer for a 3-hour shift the food and toy distribution for needy families at Metropolitan Ministries. If you need further information about this important community endeavor which will be taking place during the week before Thanksgiving and for three weekends in December, please don't hesitate to contact me.
This Shabbat weekend, we continue our reading and studies in the Book of Exodus. We will delve into Chapters 16 and 17 of the portion of Lech Lecha, where Abram and Sarai (soon to be given the names of Abraham and Sarah) venture away from the comforts of home and at Hashem's command, enter the land of Canaan. It is there, that the concubine Hagar gives birth to Ishmael and incurs Sarah's wrath. Hashem speaks with Abraham and blesses him with the covenant which is marked physically by the circumcision (brit milah) of all the males. It is marked spiritually with the promise of a son Isaac to be born from the womb of Sarah and that a great and holy nation will result. There is much to discuss in this portion in which the theme of what it means to be holy as well as those of jealousy and rivalry are seen.
