Weekly Message 10.16.2026 Parashat Noach
Parashat Noach (the man of the flood) Genesis 6:9 - 11:32
HafTorah Isaiah 54:1-10
Dear friends,
Thanks to all that helped me make the minyan so that I could recite the Kaddish prayer at my beloved mother Frieda Becker (Freidel Bat Shlomo v Sarah Leah) on the 25th anniversary of her passing.
As we continue to move through the Hebrew month of Cheshvan and the early Sedras of the Book of Bereshit (Genesis 8:15-10:32), we come to the story of Noah. After life on earth is nearly completely destroyed by flood thanks to the behavior of people, Hashem gives humanity a second chance by rescuing Noah, an honest man, his family and the animal world. Our reading of the second triennial portion of the Sedrah begins with Noah and company disembarking from the ark that saved them. They are blessed and assured of a bright future with the admonition to do good, take care of their world, and not shed human blood. Hashem assures them that the covenant will never be broken. The covenant is made with Noah and his family, but it applies to all the generations of peoplehood that follow right up to our own time. Our reading ends with a genealogy of Noah's family. Our Haftorah by the Prophet Isaiah (54:1-55:5) refers to the covenant made with Noah and the continuing redemption of the people Israel regardless of the tragedies we have encountered throughout the years.
Today, we take away the lessons of Noah's generation and learn the consequences of not taking care of our fellow humans and the environment. Let's continue to do our part to share in the covenant made with Noah.
Please join in on our religious service and study this evening at 7 pm and tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 9:30 am in-person or virtually on Zoom.
And PLEASE consider volunteering at the Metropolitan Ministries headquarters on October 27th and at the holiday tent on November 24th and December 22nd. Together and with very little sacrifice of time and effort, we can make great strides in helping our community! Please sign up at the links below and I will look forward to working with you in fulfilling this very much needed Mitzvah.
Shabbat Shalom,
Ron Becker,
Spiritual Leader
