Parachat Lech Lecha- Go/Leave Genesis 12:1-17:27
HafTorah-Isaiah 40:27-41:15
Dear friends,
As we approach a national and regional election that will help shape our future, we read the Torah portion of Lech Lecha in the Book of Bereshit (Genesis).
Our patriarch and matriarch (Abraham and Sarah) set out on a journey that sets the stage for the beginnings of Judaism and the moral principles of our great religion which they exhibited and which we now strive to live by. Abram and Sarei are given the letter Hei (ה) to become Abraham and Sarah-- Hei (ה) is celebrated as the first letter of God's name, Hashem. As importantly, Abraham and Sarah by traveling and settling in a new land, become our first immigrant family. And of course, throughout history, the Jewish people have been immigrants. Thus, we are commanded to have compassion and welcome other immigrants to our land as we have been "strangers in a strange land" in Egypt and many other places throughout the world. As immigration policy is now playing such a strong role in the upcoming election, it is incumbent upon us to remember our past and show empathy as we vote to determine our future.
