Dear friends,
As we turned the calendar to a new secular month this past week, we begin our Torah reading with the introduction to the patriarch and matriarch of our faith, Abraham and Sarah.
Previously, we learned of the majesty, beauty, and miracle of creation and how we have been given the power by Hashem to either magnify it or harm it. As we turn our attention to the fall/winter holidays and more specifically toward Thanksgiving, we are given the opportunity to gather with family and friends and in our community, to help alleviate the hunger and pain of those less fortunate. We will be volunteering this month and next at Metropolitan Ministries to distribute food and other necessities and helping to alleviate isolation and loneliness by visiting those in assisted living facilities. Please consider joining those who have already "signed up"!
We concluded last week's Torah reading with a long genealogy from Noach to Abraham and his siblings and his wife Sarah. We begin this week's portion with the call of Abraham, his transformation of self to that of the progenitor of a society of faith and morality and follow him and Sarah through their travels as they spread this faith. As in all people's lives, theirs has its ups and downs complete with missteps and triumphs. We learn that true happiness and blessing cannot be had in isolation, but in our association with the world around us.
