Parashat Chayei Sarah-Life of Sarah, Genesis 23:1-25:18
HafTorah - I Kings 1:1-
Dear friends,
This week's Torah portion Chayei Sarah (the life of Sarah) is probably a misnomer as it begins with the death of Sarah. It is better to think of it as the legacy of Sarah in that everything that happens in our history is based on the foundation that she and Abraham built. Sarah is courageous, congenial, hospitable, and faithful. She has a sense of humor and is kind to nearly everyone in her midst. However, she also possesses less attractive human frailties such as jealousy and occasionally loose with the truth when Abraham has her pretend to be his sister on more than one occasion to protect himself and by inference, her as well. So, she is a shining example for all of us. We strive to do well, we falter occasionally, and ultimately, we hope to learn from our errors. We empathize with her as she must live with the disappointment of not seeing her son Isaac after the Akeda, a disappointment that she must take to her grave.
Our Torah portion also details Isaac's marriage to Rebecca and the end of Abraham's life including the reunion of Isaac and Ishmael at his burial. Our Haftorah from the beginning of the Book of Kings details the end of King David's life and thus is a fitting complement to the Torah reading.
