Weekly Message 11.19.2021 Parashat Vayishlach

Parasaht Vayishlach (and he sent) Genesis 32:4 - 36:13

HafTorah Obadiah 1:1 - 1:21

Dear friends,

On this Shabbat preceding Thanksgiving, we have much to be thankful for and to live our lives to help make certain that others who are hungry or homeless, or without hope.

This Shabbat's Torah reading, the portion of Vayishlach in the book of Genesis is full of suffering and recovery. Our patriarch Jacob has a reunion with his estranged brother Esau and they come and go in peace. His wife Rachel gives birth to a beloved son but dies in the process of the birth. Jacob's daughter Dinah is defiled and his sons in their rage, commit a horrible revengeful act. Somehow, Jacob carries on and as we learn in reading the last triennial part of the sedrah, he and his progeny set the stage for our faith and our Hebrew nation.

We will discuss our Torah portion in the context of Thanksgiving and wish everyone a safe and happy holiday as we gather with our families which for many will be the first time in nearly two years. And we'll recount our experiences at Metropolitan Ministries and encourage further participation in our mission to feed the hungry. Our services tonight at 7:30 pm and tomorrow morning at 9:30 am will be in-person and virtually on Zoom as usual.

And a reminder that Hanukkah is just around the corner, and we have many activities to help celebrate the festival beginning with the transformation of the Spigelman Room into a Hanukkah wonderland full of necessities and gifts for the holiday. So, join us on this Sunday, November 21st from noon until 2 pm to begin the celebration together and purchase traditional and new unique items at bargain prices! And mark your calendars for our trip to Atria Windsor Woods (Sunday, November 28th at 2:45 pm) to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah with the residents, and Saturday evening December 4th to watch and cheer on our Hanukkah boat as it sails down the Cotee River during the annual New Port Richey holiday boat parade.

See you in shul and on the banks of the river!

Ron Becker,

Spiritual Leader
