HafTorah Malachi 1:1 - 2:7
Dear friends,
I hope you had a happy, meaningful, and safe Thanksgiving celebration.
As you read this, Chris and I will be on the road after our brief visit to family in Abbeville, South Carolina and if all goes well, I hope to be at services tonight.
This week's Torah portion, Toldot in the Book of Genesis (Bereshit) launches the conflict between brothers Jacob and Esau and teaches us a critical lesson, i.e. that we must love our children with impartial love. Again, we revere our patriarchs and matriarchs, but realize that just like all of us, they are human and subject to human frailties which in this case, had an enormous impact on our subsequent history. But despite their shortcomings, they exemplify piety, devotion, hospitality, caring, and kindness and have set the stage for a holy people, albeit with human frailties. Our Haftorah is from the writings of the Prophet Malachi, chapters 1 and 2. Malachi is the last of the Prophets whose prophesies took place around the year 450 of the Common Era during the period of the Second Temple and the return of many of the exiles from Babylonia. Malachi emphasizes the differences between Jacob and Esau and how their successors differed even more.
I will look forward to sharing these and other thoughts with you this Shabbat/Thanksgiving weekend. Services will be held as usual tonight at 7:30 pm and tomorrow morning at 9:30 am in-person and virtually on Zoom.
