Dear friends,
Just a week until the joyous holiday of Hanukkah which begins Thursday night. And to help us prepare, please visit the beautiful display in the synagogue's Spigelman Room from noon until 3 pm this Sunday (December 6) and next Sunday (December 13). Everything from candles, menorahs, children's books, clothing, decorations, etc. is on sale at ridiculously low prices. And as a bonus, even though this year's Cotee River holiday boat parade was canceled, our famous "Mensch on the Bench" will be there to greet you and your family.
This Shabbat weekend, we read the important, action-packed Torah portion of Vayishlach which includes the reunion between the brothers Jacob and Esau, preceded by Jacob's "wrestling with an angel". I will be speaking about lessons learned including how we deal with uncomfortable situations and the evil of deceitfulness. Our Haftorah will be from the first book of the prophet Obadiah, the only time we read from this towering figure who is descended from Edomites. I will contrast his upbringing and character, contrasting him from his ancestor Esau.
