Parashat Vayeshev (and he lived) Genesis 37:1 -40:23
HafTorah Amos 2:6 - 3:8
Dear friends,
Hanukkah is now upon us, and we begin the celebration this weekend. Our Shabbat services will take place at 7:30 pm tonight and 9:30 am tomorrow morning in-person and virtually on Zoom as usual. We will read Chapter 37 (portion of Vayeshev in the Book of Genesis) which details the unfortunate result of sibling rivalry and favoritism as we are introduced to Joseph and his brothers. Our Haftorah is from the Book of Amos, a prophet of humble beginnings as a shepherd much like King David proving that one's social rank or monetary wealth are not as important as one's morality and desire to serve. Amos teaches that worship and sacrifice must be accompanied with social justice and righteousness
Then on Sunday, we will gather at the synagogue at 1 pm and then proceed to visit the homebound at assisted living facilities armed with a menorah, candles, latkes, sufganyot, and a song sheet. We'll recite the blessings for the first night of Hanukkah, light the menorah, eat, drink, and sing with the residents. You'll find the words of the song sheets below. Please feel free to add any of your own Hanukkah tunes. We'll have printed copies available for our visitations and for the party. Speaking of which, at 4 pm, we will return to the synagogue for a Hanukkah dinner and party---more music, food, drink, and great company!
Looking forward to sharing this wonderful Shabbat/Hanukkah weekend with you!

Traditional blessings over the Hanukkah lights. Recite or sing these blessings as you light the Menorah each night during Hanukkah

Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, asher kid’shanu b-mitzvotav, v- tzivanu l’hadlik ner shel Hanukkah.
Blessed are you, Our God, Ruler of the Universe, who makes us holy through Your commandments, and commands us to light the Hanukkah lights.
Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, she-asah nisim la-avoteinu v-imoteinu ba- yamim ha-heim ba-z’man ha-zeh.
Blessed are you, Our God, Ruler of the Universe, who performed miracles for our ancestors in their days at this season.
Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech ha-olam, shehecheyanu v-ki’y’manu v-higianu la-z’man ha-zeh.
Blessed are you, Our God, Ruler of the Universe, for giving us life, for sustaining us, and for enabling us to reach this season.
MA'OZ TZUR
MAOZ TZUR YESHU'ATI
THE ROCK OF AGES
THE ROCK OF AGES IS MY SALVATION
Ma'oz tzur yeshu'ati,
Lecha na'eh leshabe-ach.
Tikon beit tefilati
Vesham todah nezabe-ach.
Le'eit tachin matbe-ach,
Mitzar ham'nabe-ach
Az egmor beshir mizmor
Chanukat hamizbe-ach
(repeat last two lines)
Rock of Ages, let our song
Praise thy saving power.
You amidst the raging foes
Were our sheltering tower.
Furious, they assailed us,
But your armour veiled us.
And thy word broke their sword
When our own strength failed us.
OH HANUKKAH OH HANUKKAH! ENGLISH AND YIDDISH
Oh Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah
Come light the menorah
Come to our party
We'll all dance the hora
Gather 'round the table
We'll give you a treat,
Dreidels to play with and latkes to eat
And while we are playing
The candles are burning low
One for each night, they shed a sweet light
To remind us of days long ago
One for each night, they shed a sweet light
To remind us of days long ago

I HAVE A LITTLE DREYDEL
I have a little dreidel
I made it out of clay
And when it's dry and ready
Then, dreidel I shall play
Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
I made it out of clay
And when it's dry and ready
Then, dreidel I will play
It has a lovely body
With legs so short and thin
And when it gets all tired
It drops and I will win
Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
I made it out of clay
And when it's dry and ready
Then, dreidel I will play
My dreidel is so playful
It loves to dance and spin
A happy game of dreidel
Come play now, let's begin
Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
I made it out of clay
And when it's dry and ready
Then, dreidel I will play

LIGHT ONE CANDLE
Light one candle for the Maccabee children
With thanks that their light didn't die
Light one candle for the pain they endured
When their right to exist was denied
Light one candle for the terrible sacrifice
Justice and freedom demand
But light one candle for the wisdom to know
When the peacemaker's time is at hand
Don't let the light go out!
It's lasted for so many years!
Don't let the light go out!
Let it shine through our hope and our tears.
Light one candle for the strength that we need
To never become our own foe
And light one candle for those who are suffering
Pain we learned so long ago
Light one candle for all we believe in
That anger not tear us apart
And light one candle to find us together
With peace as the song in our hearts
Don't let the light go out!
It's lasted for so many years!
Don't let the light go out!
Let it shine through our hope and our tears.
What is the memory that's valued so highly
That we keep it alive in that flame?
What's the commitment to those who have died
That we cry out they've not died in vain?
We have come this far always believing
That justice would somehow prevail
This is the burden, this is the promise
This is why we will not fail!
Don't let the light go out!
Don't let the light go out!
Don't let the light go out!
