Parashat Miketz (at the end) Genesis 31:1 - 44:17, Numbers 7:24-29
HafTorah Zachariah 2:14 - 4:7
Dear friends,
Hanukkah has arrived! I am looking forward to sharing this wonderful holiday with you both at our Shabbat/Hanukkah services, our visitation to the Trinity Place Assisted Living Center and at our annual Hanukkah dinner party. We begin our shared experience tonight with services at 7:30 pm which will include the reading of selections from the Book of Maccabee. Then tomorrow morning (Saturday) beginning at 9:30 am we celebrate Shabbat and the 3rd day of Hanukkah by chanting the Hallel (psalms of praise), a special Haftorah for Shabbat/Hanukkah by the Prophet Zacharia, and Al Ha Nissim in the Amidah:
(And) for the miracles and for the redemption and for the mighty acts and for the salvation and for the wars
that You have done for our forefathers in those days in this season.
In the days of Mattathias son of Yochanan the High Priest the Hasmonean and his sons,
when the wicked Greek Kingdom rose up against Your nation Israel to make them forget Your Torah and to remove them from the laws of your will,
and You in Your great mercy stood up for them in their time of distress.
You fought their fight, judged their judgement, [and] avenged their revenge.
You turned over the strong in the hand of the weak, and the many in the hand of the few,
and the impure in the hand of the pure, and the wicked in the hand of the righteous, and sinners in the hand of those involved with Your Torah.
And for You, You made a great and holy name name in Your world,
and for Your nation Israel you did a great salvation and redemption to this day.
And after this Your children came to the Holy of Holies of Your House
and cleaned your abode, and sanctified your sanctuary, and lit candles in the courtyards of your sanctuary,
and established these eight days of Hanukkah to give thanks and praise to your great name.
Our weekly Torah reading from the 3rd triennial portion of the Sedrah of Mikketz (Genesis 43:16-44:17) features Joseph's (now elevated to the highest rank in Egyptian society) first encounter with his brothers as they sojourned to Egypt in search of food and provisions during the regionwide famine in which only Egypt thanks to Joseph's foresight and planning has the resources badly needed by our patriarch Jacob and his large family. From our second scroll (Bamidbar 7:24-29), in honor of the 3rd day of Hanukkah, we read the sacrifices that were made at the dedication of the altar in the wilderness on the 3rd day.
Then on Sunday, December 29th, we gather at Trinity Place Assisted Living at 8684 Old County Rd 54, New Port Richey, FL 34653 to celebrate the holiday with the residents with song, food, and good cheer. Please plan on joining us for this important mitzvah. Please let me know if you need a ride. If you have any favorite Hanukkah songs, please email the lyrics to me so that we can include them in our song sheets. Then at 6 pm, we gather at the synagogue for our annual Hanukkah dinner party with a delicious holiday deli dinner with all the festive accompaniments.
