Weekly Message 02.11.2022 Parashat Tetzaveh

Parashat Tetzvaeh - ("you shall command") Exodus 27:20 - 30:10

HafTorah - Ezekiel 43:10 - 27

Dear friends,

I hope you have had a pleasant week buoyed by the cooler weather. During the month of Adar, we are commanded to "increase our joy" and I encourage you all to think about what you and your families and our community do to make ourselves and the world around us a happier place to be.

Today, I am attending the Pasco County Food Advisory Council of which I am a member. The Food Policy Advisory Council (“FPAC”) was established by the Board of County Commissioners in 2015 for the purpose of supporting an equitable, resilient, local food system in the County and to facilitate the review of responsible policies that improve the access to culturally appropriate, nutritionally sound and affordable food produced in the County. It is charged to provide credible, well-conceived community food policy advice that can dramatically reduce instances of chronic disease, preserve agricultural lands, promote agricultural uses throughout the County, and assist in the development of new businesses in the food system sector. I can't say that we have accomplished our goals, but the fact that we exist and are making the effort is an important aspect of "increasing our joy". It is important to choose an area that will "increase your joy" and participate in it either through action or through monetary support. In our case, Chris and I have chosen to support the eradication of hunger and hopelessness, a free press, and access to education and libraries. We can't change the world all at once, but as individuals and as a congregation we can do our part to help make incremental progress.

I am looking forward to sharing our Shabbat services with you tonight at 7:30 pm and tomorrow morning at 9:30 am in-person or virtually, on Zoom. Our Torah portion, Tetzaveh in the Book of Exodus recounts the role of Aaron as the Kohane Godol (High Priest) with further instructions on the Tabernacle, the priestly vestments, and the accompanying sacrifices. Tomorrow morning after services, Laura Bernas, Chris Becker, and I will be sponsoring a "socially distanced" Kiddush luncheon in recognition of our February birthdays. See you in shul and/or on the screen!

Shabbat Shalom,

Ron Becker
