Friday, 21 Adar I, 5784
Our solar "leap day" of February 29th is now behind us, but we continue to celebrate our Hebrew calendar's lunar leap year during the two months of Adar as we "increase our joy". And tonight, we remember Mary Gaines of blessed memory, a woman who by example on how to live an upright and positive life, set an example for us all for so many years. We celebrate a long life well lived and share our memories with her family at our
Shabbat dinner. We gather at 6:30 pm with a brief Kabbalat Shabbat/Maariv service, followed by our Shabbat home rituals (candle lighting blessings of children, Kiddush and Motzei (blessing of the Challah) and a delicious catered dinner in Mary's memory sponsored by Marla and Joel Gartner.
The theme of this week's Shabbat reading of Ki Tisa in the Book of Exodus is faith in the future. Let's remember the confidence and faith that Mary had and build upon it. We read about the lack of faith exhibited by our ancestors in the wilderness leading to the building and worshiping of the golden calf in Moses's absence.
Let us stop praying to our own "golden calves" i.e. wealth, cynicism, apathy, etc. and like our ancestors, thus be given a second chance to enjoy what really matters in life as we continue to enjoy the months of Adar and anticipate the holiday of Purim and festival of Pesach.
For those joining us virtually on Zoom, services begin one hour early at 6:30 pm this evening. Tomorrow morning's service will be at 9:30 am.
And congratulations to Carol and Paul Land on the Bat Mitzvah of their granddaughter Kaylee Land this Shabbat!
