Weekly Message 03.10.2023 Parashat KiTisa

Parashat Ki Tisa (when you take) Exodus 30:11-34:35

2nd Torah - Numbers 19:1-22

HafTorah Ezekiel - 36:16-36

Dear friends,

Let me begin by letting you know how much I enjoyed our Purim celebration on Monday night and how much I appreciate the opportunity to participate via Zoom from my rehab center room. Thanks to all who made it possible and to Jerry who translated some of my "not so complimentary" Yiddish expressions upon hearing the name of the villain of Megillat Esther! I am happy to report that I am getting healthier and stronger by the day and am thankful for all of your visits and good wishes.

Now that Purim is behind us, we can begin to prepare for Passover in earnest. This Shabbat launches our preparation as it is Shabbat Parah, the Sabbath of the red heifer. The ritual which is detailed in the special maftir Torah reading describes the manner in which the Kohanim and the people purified themselves in preparation for the sacrifice of the Korban Pesach. This is symbolized on our seder plate by the "Zeroa" which can be a shank bone or chicken wing. This also reminds us that Pesach is less than a month away. Once again, we will be meeting on Zoom for an hour on the first night of the festival to read and study the Haggadah together up until the meal. My family and I really enjoyed sharing this precious time with you last year and very much looking forward to being with you as we sit at our Seder tables on the evening of Wednesday, April 5th. Details to follow.

In addition to observing Shabbat Parah, our regular Torah portion is Ki Tisa in the Book of Exodus. It is in this Sedra that Moses receives the tablets containing the Ten Commandments only to find on his descent from the mountain, that his people had constructed and were worshipping a golden calf. This is the gravest example of how difficult it is to escape the bonds of dependence, but a step in the long journey resulting in the struggle for true freedom. This Shabbat, we also read a special Haftorah from the Book of Ezekiel which is always chanted on Shabbat Parah.

Please join us this evening at 7:30 pm and tomorrow morning at 9:30 am in person or on Zoom as we mark this special Shabbat.

Wishing you all the best as we begin our preparations for Pesach.

Ron Becker,

Spiritual Leader
