Parashat Acharei Mot (after the death) Kedoshim (Holy) Leviticus 16:1-20:27

Dear friends,
I hope you had a pleasant week as a few gloomy days gave way to spectacular spring days! We remain confident that with the growing numbers of those who have received the vaccination together with continued vigilance, we will be able to be together again soon. On May 7th, we will return to hybrid services, both in-person while socially distanced and on Zoom. In the meantime, we will continue our prayers and study on Zoom.
We are in the midst of reading the Book of Leviticus (Vayikra) which introduces many laws and practices and this year, being a non-leap year, is full of double portions so that we can be all "caught up" in time to celebrate the completion of the Torah on Simchat Torah, a joyous occasion that I hope and am confident that we will celebrate together in-person. So, in that context, this Shabbat we read and study the double portion of Acharei Mot and Kedoshim. Acharei Mot should be familiar to most as it delineates the sacrifices of Yom Kippur and the often-told story of the "scape goat" is read just like we do every Yom Kippur. But the highlight of this Shabbat is the concept of Kedoshim (holiness). We are told the famous words that because G-d is holy, then we too must act in a holy fashion both as individuals and as a nation. It thus serves as the foundation of our beliefs and what it means to be a committed Jew.
