Thank you all for helping to make our Shavuot celebration so wonderful and meaningful this year.
There is a fairly common expression of "Christmas in July", but did you know that one can make an argument for "Hanukkah in June"? All joking aside, this week's Torah reading from the portion of Naso in the Book of Bamidbar (Numbers) is identical to the one we read during Hanukkah and the Haftorah that we read next Shabbat from the prophet Zechariah is identical to what we read on the Shabbat of Hanukkah. The reason that these verses are chosen to be repeated during the celebration of Hanukkah is that they deal with giving gifts and with the establishment of the Menorah. Our 3rd triennial reading this Shabbat contains the detail of the identical gift offerings for the dedication of the Holy Tabernacle by the princes of each of the twelve tribes on twelve consecutive days, with each gift symbolizing the essence of the Torah. Midrash tells us that "none among the princes wished to out rival the others, but such harmony reigned among them, and such united of spirit, that their gifts were valued as if each had brought not only his own gifts, but also those of the princes of the entire nation". So, between the universal notion of gift giving and next week's discussion of the Menorah, we have a little "Hanukkah in June"!
