Parashat Behaalotecha (when you raise) Numbers 8:1 - 12:16
HafTorah Zachariah 2:14 - 4:7
Dear friends,
We celebrate the first days of summer together this Shabbat weekend. In our Torah reading, the children of Israel are finally equipped with the knowledge and incentives to continue their journey into the wilderness as the cloud is lifted. They are to travel in their tribal formations in a very organized manner considering their huge numbers and the future of their arriving in the Promised Land sooner rather than later appears to be on target. However, as we soon learn, they are far from ready to acquire the responsibility of being a holy nation in the land of Israel.
Instead, they bicker over what they feel are deprivations (e.g. the lack of meat) and soon
begin to complain (I.e. kvetch) about a myriad of topics. Even Miriam and Aaron join in with signs of jealousy towards their brother Moses and question his leadership. As we will soon see, this is exasperated even further later on with the negative response to the spies' report on the land and inhabitants of the Holy Land and then results in outright rebellion later on. Ultimately, this will result in 40 years of wandering .
Please join me at our services this evening at 7:30 pm and tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 9:30 am in-person or online on Zoom to help make our minyan.
And please save the following dates:
Saturday June 29th: Join Bary Cohen and his family as he celebrates his Bar Mitzvah anniversary with a Shabbat luncheon after the morning service.
Sunday August 11th: Join our congregational friends and our friends at Temple Beth David for Jewish Community Day at Tropicana Field as the Rays take on their division rival Baltimore Orioles. Please let the office know if you will be attending. The cost is $40 which includes a field level seat and a special Rays cap.
Tuesday August 13th: We will be reading the Book of Lamentations in recognition of Tisha B'Av at 9:30 am both in-person and on Zoom
Shabbat Shalom!
