Parashat Chukat (Statute) Numbers 19:1 - 22:1
HafTorah Judges 11:1 - 33
Dear friends,
Greetings from a pine forest in the beach community of Middlesex Beach in Delaware where Chris, our grandson Joshua, and I are spending this week and next with our old college buddies, the 54th consecutive summer we have had this wonderful reunion. It's a tradition that we have cherished and now includes three generations of family and friends of all ages.
Thanks to all who helped make the minyan every day last week as we joined the family of Shirley Cohen to honor her memory each night during the Shiva week.
This Shabbat, we read the portion of Chukkat in the Book of Bamidbar, the same that we read on Shabbat Parah, one of the special Shabbatot the weeks leading to the Pesach festival. After the description of the sacrifice of the red heifer for which the Parashat is known, the narrative of complaint and restlessness continues and results in the transformative moment of Moses striking the rock which leads to his prohibition from physically entering the land of Israel at the end of the long period of wandering. It becomes increasingly clear that the adult population is not ready for the responsibilities inherent in a free people.
We will have religious services and study this evening at 7:30 pm and tomorrow (Saturday
morning) at 9:30 am. I will look forward to joining you on Zoom. So far, the WIFI is holding up here in the Wilderness!
Shabbat Shalom,
Ron Becker,
Spiritual Leader
