Parashat Devarim (thewords) Deuteronomy 1:1 - 3:22
Parashat Isaiah 1:1 - 27
Dear friends,
Greetings from the state of Delaware where we are completing the second and final week of our reunion vacation. I will be back in time for our Tisha B'Av observance on July 27th.
This Shabbat our chanting and davening is more subdued than usual as it is the Shabbat preceding Tisha B'Av. Tonight's rendition of Lecha Dodi will be to the tune of Eli Tsion, a slower, more comforting than exciting melody. Then tomorrow morning, we begin the final book of the Torah, Devorim (Deuteronomy) where Moses begins the first of his final discourse recapping all that has occurred since leaving Egypt and exhorting the people to follow all of the mitzvot and live moral and compassionate lives in the Promised Land. He warns them of the consequences of not following this advice and reminds them how immoral deeds have led to disaster over the nearly forty years in the wilderness. And, of course, as we near Tisha B'Av, we know precisely what those consequences can be ending with humiliating defeat and expulsion from the land. In today's day and age, there is much to learn from Moses's prophetic words!
The Haftorah for this Shabbat (Isaiah 1:1-27) is the third and final Haftorah of rebuke and always chanted just prior to Tisha B'Av. Isaiah warns the people of Israel that their sacrifices, prayers, and other ritual activities are meaningless if they continue to lead wicked lives and ignore the principles of justice and righteousness.
Please come in-person or virtually on Zoom tonight at 7:30 pm and tomorrow morning at 9:30 am to help make a minyan at our Shabbat services and again on Thursday, July 27th at 9:30 am to read and discuss Jeremiah's Book of Lamentations (Eicha) as we observe Tisha B'Av. If you would like to read the book ahead of time, you can find it in several places on the Internet including https://www.sefaria.org/Lamentations.3.66?lang=bi
Best wishes to all!
Ron Becker,
Spiritual Leader
