Dear friends,
Greetings from Middlesex Beach, Delaware where my family and friends have gathered for our 52nd annual reunion. We hope you are all well spiritually and physically! This Shabbat, we complete the Book of Bamidbar in the Torah with the double portion of Matot/Massei.
Matot (“Tribes”) opens with laws about vows and continues to describe the Israelites’ war against the Midianites and the allocation of spoils. The tribes of Reuben and Gad request to dwell outside of the Land of Israel, and Moses acquiesces on the condition that they help conquer it. Masei (“Travels”), the final Torah portion in the Book of Numbers, opens with a list of places that the Israelites traveled in the desert. G-d commands the Israelites to destroy idolatry in the Land of Israel, outlines Israel’s boundaries, and details the laws of cities of refuge for accidental killers.
Our Hatorah is from the Prophet Jeremiah and is the 2nd of the 3 Haftorot of Rebuke read during the period culminating with Tisha B'Av. With the new month of Menachm Av, we are in the midst of the saddest period of the Hebrew calendar, the commemorating the time between the breaching of the walls of the Temple in Jerusalem and its destrubtion.
I was pleased to learn that the synagogue has been completely disinfected and cleaned so that services can once again be held in-person while social-distancing and virtually on Zoom tonight at 7:30 pm and tomorrow at 9:30 am. Although I have WIFI at our beach cabin, I don't have speakers or camera so will wish you a Shabbat Shalom now. You are in good hands with Eileen Hochstadt and Elliot Shapiro leading services.
