Parashat Re'eh (See) Deuteronomy 11:26 - 55:5
HafTorah Isaiah 54:11 - 55:5

Dear friends,
This Shabbat, we continue our preparation for those awesome days of our calendar with our continued Torah reading of the Book of Deuteronomy (11:26-12:28) and chanting of the third of the seven Haftorahs of Consolation leading us from Tisha B'Av and Rosh Hashanah (Isaiah 54:11-55:5).
The Book of Deuteronomy consists largely of our greatest Prophet Moses delivers discourses to those who have endured the many years in the wilderness, while learning the mitzvot and the importance of carrying them out when occupying the Promised Land. In this week's Torah reading which concludes the Second Discourse and begins the Third, the blessings and curses are enumerated once again. They are reminded of the consequences of abandoning our Hashem given laws and not treating people and the land with the respect they are due.
Just as the Children of Israel faced crossroads in their journey toward the Promised Land, we too face crossroads nearly every day and must decide which way to turn. We constantly make decisions big and small regarding our families, our work, our faith, and our relationships with the outside world. We can make bold decisions, or we can choose the status quo or a return to previous times. We can be proactive in helping to heal breakdowns in society or we can retreat to our safe places.
And as Isaiah indicates, there will always be temptations to revert to practicing idolatry (i.e. worshipping greed and selfishness) so at that time and in all present and future generations, we must remember to maintain our spiritual identity. Regardless of where we reside, we have been given an extraordinary gift, a wonderful land with the potential of abundance and joy and with the physical and mental capacity to maintain it for ourselves and all who inhabit it. The Torah and Isaiah tell us:
"No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue that will condemn any tongue that will rise against you". However, the fulfillment of this pledge is dependent on our right choice in regard to the "Two Ways". We have been given the physical and spiritual tools to make the correct choices. And we alone live with the consequences of those choices which result in blessings and curses.
Let's continue this discussion as we study and pray together this Shabbat, this evening at 7 pm and tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 9:30 am in person and virtually, on Zoom.
And we end Shabbat with our monthly game night and Havdalah at 7 pm tomorrow (Saturday) evening.
Please see the late summer and fall schedule below and take note that volunteers at Metropolitan Ministries are needed more than ever during the summer when the young residents are not in school. Thanks to all who gave of their time this week. Our next session will be on Thursday, August 27th at 11 am. You will find the signup link below.
Shabbat Shalom,
Ron Becker,
