Weekly Message 08.13.2021 Parashat Shoftim

Parashat Shoftim-Judges Deuteronomy 16:18 - 21:9

HafTorah Isiaih 51:12 - 52:12

Dear friends,

Chris, Nathan, Joshua, and I are back from our trip to Delaware. We enjoyed the time spent with our old college friends and three generations of our families.

With the High Holy Days rapidly approaching, we are preparing to share them with you and help increase their meaning for all of us. So, appropriately, this Shabbat, we chant and study the portion of Shoftim (literally "judges") in the Book of Deuteronomy (Devorim). We read the famous line that can certainly serve as our motto: "Justice, justice shall you pursue". We will deal with the concept of justice in all of its manifestations whether it's in the courtroom or in treating all people fairly whether they are friends, strangers, or foes. This includes justice in the courts and in our dealings with others in everyday life. Our prayers are meaningless if they are not accompanied by righteous behavior. To help us prepare further for the High Holy Days, our reading from the Prophets will be the 4th Haftorah of Consolation attributed to Isaiah which sends salvation to all people who champion justice and righteousness wherever they reside
