Parashat Ki Teitzei (when you go out) Deuteronomy 21:10 -25:19
HafTorah Isaiah 54:1-10
Dear friends,
As we approach the High Holy Days, we gather this Shabbat to continue our reading of the Book of Deuteronomy (Devorim) with Parashat Ki Tetzei, a portion full of laws regarding many aspects of human life, indeed containing more laws than any other portion of the Torah. The sedrah concludes with the commandment to remember Amalek and therefore blot out evil wherever it occurs, the same portion that we read on Shabbat Zachor, the Shabbat immediately preceding the celebration of Purim. We then read and study the 5th of the 7 Haftorahs of Consolation with the famous last line from the Prophet Isaiah (54:10).
כִּ֤י הֶהָרִים֙ יָמ֔וּשׁוּ וְהַגְּבָע֖וֹת תְּמוּטֶ֑ינָה וְחַסְדִּ֞י מֵאִתֵּ֣ךְ לֹא־יָמ֗וּשׁ וּבְרִ֤ית
שְׁלוֹמִי֙ לֹ֣א תָמ֔וּט אָמַ֥ר מְרַחֲמֵ֖ךְ יְהֹוָֽה
For the mountains may move
And the hills be shaken,
But my loyalty shall never move from you,
Nor My covenant of friendship be shaken
—said HaShem, who takes you back in love.
