Weekly Message 09.13.2024 Parashat Ki Teitzei

Parashat Ki Teitzei (when you go out) Deuteronomy 21:10 - 25:19

HafTorah - Isaiah 54:1-10

Dear friends,

Now well into the month of Elul, and only a little over three weeks from Rosh Hashanah, we quicken our preparations. As part of those preparations, Chris and I are visiting family, tidying up the gravesites and chanting memorial prayers at the various cemeteries in New Jersey and New York where family and friends are buried. And a reminder that we will be doing the same at home on Sunday, September 29th at 10:30 am at Beit Olam Cemetery in Trinity when we will also hold the unveiling ceremony for the memorial stones for our beloved late Rabbi Al Goldberg and Rebbetzin Sandy Goldberg. We will then proceed to Grace Memorial Cemetery in Hudson at 12:30 pm and finally at the National Cemetery in Bushnell at 2:30 pm. Please join us at one or more of those venues to participate in this important mitzvah. We will chant a memorial prayer even if your loved one is not interred there.

This Shabbat, we will be reading the studying the portion of Ki Teitzei in the Book of Deuteronomy, a sedrah replete with the repetition of criminal and civil laws regarding family, commerce, animals, and property to remind the children of Israel about the moral fabric that they must acquire and maintain as they enter the Holy Land. And we read the 5th of the 7 Haftorahs of Consolation of the Prophet Isaiah to help us further prepare for Rosh Hashanah and beyond. Please plan to attend in-person or virtually on Zoom tonight at 7:30 pm and tomorrow at 9:30 am.

Ki Teitzei concludes with the commandment to remember for all time the most heinous act committed against the IsraelitesAmalek’s killing of the old, weak, and infirm after the Israelites left Egypt. We are instructed to eradicate evil deeds and thoughts always and forever. Our Holocaust rescued Torah is always on display and rolled to that exact spot. And on Sunday, November 10th we will join congregations throughout the State of Florida at the JCC in Sarasota to march with our Torah and all the other rescued Holocaust Torahs to commemorate the anniversary of Kristallnacht. All are encouraged to attend and march with us on that very significant day and event.

Shabbat Shalom,

Ron Becker,

Spiritual Leader
