Weekly Message 09.26.2020 Parashat Ha'Azinu

Ha'Azinu - Listen - Deuteronomy 32:1-52

HafTorah - Hosea 14:2-10, Micah 7:18-20, Joel 2:15-27

Dear friends,

L'Shana Tova! It was great to see so many of you at the synagogue, on Zoom, and at the Cotee River for our Shofar and Tashchlich services.

I personally have gained new insights from our liturgy and our discussions and very much appreciate your participation. And special thanks to JR Farley who blew the Shofar so well, to Barbara D. Johnson who provided perfect virtual coverage of our Rosh Hashanah services through Zoom and to all of you who attended our activities anyway you could during this difficult time. And of course, thanks to our President, Eileen Hochstadt for her tireless work and energy to keep our community going!

This Shabbat weekend, we continue with the week of reflection and awe with Shabbat Shuva, the Sabbath of Repentance and Return which always takes place between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. On Saturday morning, we will read the next-to-last portion of the Book of Deuteronomy (Ha'Azinu) where Moses sings his last song prior to his farewell journey to the top of Mount Nebo to view the Promised Land before his death. And we chant a beautiful Haftorah consisting of the words of three Prophets: Hosea, Micah, and Joel urging us to take responsibility for our actions and to match them to the values that we have learned throughout our lives. As dark as things might seem today, we are capable of turning them around both as individuals and as a society. Last year's adult B'Nai Mitzvahs will chant the Haftorah as they did so masterfully last year!

On Sunday, September 28th, we are gathering in the JCC Sukkah to decorate it for this beautiful holiday that begins next week. It is the last weekend day that this can be accomplished so we REALLY need volunteers. Please come out if you possibly can. The more volunteers, the quicker we can decorate the Sukkah! Then of course, we proceed to the holiest day of the year, Yom Kippur, which begins with Kol Nidre at 6:15 pm on Sunday and continues with services throughout the day on Monday.
