Dear friends,
I would like to open this week's message by thanking all those who accompanied Chris and me on our visitations on erev Hanukkah. We got to some of our members not able to leave their homes as well as others at the Vitality assisted living center, light candles, eat latkes and sufganyot, sing familiar and unfamiliar Hanukkah tunes, and enjoy our time together as well as brightening up the day for those who are "shut in". And special thanks to those who prepared the wonderful Hanukkah feast which followed!
This week we have continued our Hanukkah celebrations and we are approaching Shabbat Hanukkah with all of its special rituals. Because it is also Rosh Chodesh, we will be reading from not one, not two, but from three Torahs this Shabbat. From the first Torah, we will read Chapter 41 from the Book of Genesis (Bereshit), in the portion of Miketz learning of Joseph's rise to power in Egypt. The chapter ends with his marriage to Asenath, the daughter of a royal Egyptian priest and the birth of their two sons Manassah and Ephraim. To this day, we pray every Shabbat that our sons should grow to be like Manassah and Ephraim! We conclude our Torah study with a Haftorah containing the powerful words of the prophet Zechariah and concluding with "not by might, not by power, but by my spirit says the Lord of Hosts".
This Shabbat, I am making a special plea for all to attend our services beginning at 7:30 pm this evening and 9:30 am tomorrow morning. As I am experiencing continuing back problems and unable to lift any heavy objects, we need able bodied people to help with those three Torahs that we will be reading from on Shabbat morning! I'm happy to do the leyening, but must have people to do the heavy lifting!
