Dear friends,
It is with a heavy heart that I write to you as we prepare for Shabbat tonight. For the first time in my memory, we lost close relatives of three of our members in the same week. I am sorry to share the news of the deaths of Laura Bernas's mother, Barry Cohen's mother, and Paul Land's brother. The funerals and shiva observances for the Bernas and Cohen families will be out of state in New Jersey and New York respectively. There will be a memorial service for Paul Land's brother, Howard חיים לייב בן רחמיאל וחנה
at the synagogue on the morning of Tuesday, June 6th Details to follow.
May the Almighty comfort them among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
BEHAR- BECHUKOTAI
Please join us at Shabbat services this evening at 7:30 pm and tomorrow morning at 9:30 am. This week, we finish the Book of Leviticus with the combined portions of Behar/Bechukotai which occurs shortly after Earth Day is observed throughout the world.
This is fitting as we learn the commandments of the sabbatical and jubilee years where the earth is to be rested just as we are to be rested on Shabbat. We also read and study the mitzvot relating to the treatment of our fellow humans particularly those who are in servitude, aliens among us, and all who are in our midst. We are commanded to treat all of our negihbors as we do our closest relatives in times of need. More on this at our services. Looking forward to seeing you in-person or virtually on Zoom this Shabbat and wishing our mourners to be blessed with their memoris and that they know no more sorrow,
