Parashat Eikev (because) - Deuteronomy 7:12 -11:25
HafTorah - Isaiah 49:14- 51:3
Dear friends,
We welcome the month of August with our bimonthly Shabbat dinner.
Tonight, we gather at the synagogue at 6:30 pm (NOT 7:30!) both in-person and virtually on Zoom for a short Shabbat evening service followed by a film and a delicious baked ziti meal with all the trimmings catered by Chef Jeff.
Then tomorrow morning at 9:30, services will include the continuation of our reading and studying the Book of Deuteronomy (Devarim) with the portion of Ekev in which Moses recounts all that has happened in the nearly 40 years in the wilderness including the miraculous dropping of manna to eat, the sin of the golden calf, and the death of his brother and priest Aaron. Moses details the blessings and the curses that will be bestowed upon the Israelites depending on their willingness to obey the mitzvot or not. Our greatest prophet's words should inspire us to do all we can in a manner in which we are able to protect our families, our communities, and our earth so that we can pass it on from generation to generation. !לדור ודור
The Haftorah (Isaiah 49:14-51:3) for this Shabbat is the 2nd of the 7 Haftorot of Consolation and Comfort between Tisha B'Av and Rosh Hashanah. It concludes with:
כִּֽי־נִחַ֨ם יְהֹוָ֜ה צִיּ֗וֹן נִחַם֙ כׇּל־חׇרְבֹתֶ֔יהָ וַיָּ֤שֶׂם מִדְבָּרָהּ֙ כְּעֵ֔דֶן וְעַרְבָתָ֖הּ כְּגַן־יְהֹוָ֑ה שָׂשׂ֤וֹן וְשִׂמְחָה֙ יִמָּ֣צֵא בָ֔הּ תּוֹדָ֖ה וְק֥וֹל זִמְרָֽה׃
Truly GOD has comforted Zion,
Comforted all her ruins—
Made her wilderness like Eden,
Her desert like the Garden of G-D.
Gladness and joy shall abide there,
Thanksgiving and the sound of music.
