Dear friends,
We had one of our most enjoyable Shabbat evening dinner and program last Friday evening and I am looking forward to many more in the future.
This Shabbat, we move closer to the High Holy Days and continue our preparation with lessons learned in the Book of Devarim (Deuteronomy). We are reading and studying the portion of Re'eh this week. In order to prepare the children of Israel for life in the Holy Land, Moses proceeds to summarize the code of laws that has been handed down and once again, warns of the consequences of not following them.
רְאֵ֗ה אָנֹכִ֛י נֹתֵ֥ן לִפְנֵיכֶ֖ם הַיּ֑וֹם בְּרָכָ֖ה וּקְלָלָֽה
Behold I set before you this day a blessing and a curse.
These laws cover religious instruction and worship; government of the people, criminal law, domestic life, and the three pilgrimage festivals: Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot. Our Haftorah for the week is the 3rd of 7 Haftorahs chanted between Tish B'Av and Rosh Hashanah, Isaiah 54:11-55:5. Both the Torah and Haftorah stress communal mitzvot over striving for individual gains. We must care for others as well as for ourselves. In that spirit, I am completing a mental health first aid class this week together with many other religious and community leaders. https://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org/ I hope to use the information and skills gleaned from this training to help serve to the best of my ability.
