Parashat Noach (Noah and the Great Flood) - Genesis 6:9 - 11:32
HafTorah - Isaiah 54:1 - 10

Dear friends ,
This Shabbat (services tonight at 7:30 pm and Saturday morning at 9:30 am in-person and virtually on Zoom), we continue with you reading of the Book of Genesis (Bereshit) 6:9-8:14, the first triennial reading of the portion of Noach. Since I have yahrzeit for my mother Frieda Becker (Fradl Bat Shlomo v Sarah Leah) of blessed memory, I would like to conduct a very brief Mincha service just before our regular Kabbalat service tonight (Friday) and would very much appreciate our having a minyan for that. Thanks!
Noach is commanded to build the ark that will save him, his family, and the earth's non-human creatures from destruction of all of the rest of humanity. Noach is portrayed as an honest character in a corrupt world although he is seen as far from perfect. He seems to be a quiet, unassuming character who works hard and cares for his family and he obeys Hashem's command. However, he neither pleads for mercy for the rest of the earth's people and animals as does Abraham when Hashem threatens to destroy two corrupt cities, nor does Noach warn anyone else outside his immediate family. So, we learn that one need not be perfect, but that we must be careful in choosing our role models. Later in our study of Genesis, we learn that Abraham too has his human faults, but his integrity is beyond reproach, and he is the one chosen to be the patriarch of our faith.
Also, in the time of Noach, Hashem made the decision to destroy most of humanity. Since the giving of the Torah and mitzvot, we have now been given the tools and the options to either flourish in and beautify our world if we follow those mitzvot, or to harm the world if we fail to. Let's discuss this further in our Torah study this Shabbat!
As you can see below, that in addition to our religious services, we have many other activities and volunteering opportunities available. I sincerely hope that all of our congregants will participate in serving our community's less fortunate and celebrating holidays with us!
